چکیده

The wind velocity and temperature profiles observed in the middle atmosphere (altitude: 10-100 km) show perturbations resulting from superposition of various atmospheric waves, including atmospheric gravity waves. Atmospheric gravity waves are known to play an important role in determining the general circulation in the middle atmosphere by dynamical stresses caused by gravity wave breaking. In this paper, we summarize the characteristics of atmospheric gravity waves observed using the middle and upper atmosphere (MU) radar in Japan, as well as novel satellite data obtained from global positioning system radio occultation (GPS RO) measurements. In particular, we focus on the behavior of gravity waves in the mesosphere (50-90 km), where considerable gravity wave attenuation occurs. We also report on the global distribution of gravity wave activity in the stratosphere (10-50 km), highlighting various excitation mechanisms such as orographic effects, convection in the tropics, meteorological disturbances, the subtropical jet and the polar night jet.

A radio holographic approach, developed by Pavelyev (1998), Hocke et al. (1999), Igarashi et al. (2000), is applied to observation of wave phenomena in the upper atmosphere using Global Positioning System "Microlab-l" satellite (GPS/MET) radio occultation data. In the current state the radio holography approach uses the radar focused synthetic aperture principle to obtain high spatial resolutio...

Inversion of GPS meteorology data

The GPS meteorology (GPS/MET) experiment, led by the Universities Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), consists of a GPS receiver aboard a low earth orbit (LEO) satellite which was launched on 3 April 1995. During a radio occultation the LEO satellite rises or sets relative to one of the 24 GPS satellites at the Earth's horizon. Thereby the atmospheric layers are successively sounded by...

Atmosphere sounding using GPS radio occultation

Introduction On July 17, 1995 the U.S. Air Force announced “ .. that today the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite constellation has met all requirements for Full Operational Capability”. Apart from precise positioning GPS signals also can be used to derive characteristic properties of the propagation medium (neutral atmosphere and ionosphere). Onboard the Low-Earth-Orbiting MICROLAB-1 sa...

Detection of migrating diurnal tide in the tropical upper troposphere and lower stratosphere using the Challenging Minisatellite Payload radio occultation data

[1] The atmospheric limb sounding technique making use of radio signals transmitted by the Global Positioning System (GPS) has already proven to be a promising approach for global atmospheric measurements. In this study, we assess for the first time the potential of GPS radio occultation soundings for detecting the migrating diurnal tide. Retrieved temperatures between 10 and 30 km in the tropi...
